This week’s Buffy-esque episode of Freeform’s Shadowhunters featured “zombies,” the debut of Catarina Loss (finally!), a battle of the J.C.s, and some serious commitment to sparkle motion. You can read our full review here, but below are some bite-sized bests from episode 2×19!
1: Best Newcomer:
Catarina Loss is already a fave.
We’ve been anxiously awaiting the appearance of the oft-mentioned but up-until-now-unseen Catarina Loss. Even visibly tired from a long day, her rapport with Magnus was a bit reminiscent of Ragnor Fell, and we’re absolutely in love with her (and cursing the fact that we never got the chance to see these three on our screens together). A character who is as willing to care for ailing mundanes and baby warlocks as she is to go head-to-head with the Clave is a character we need to see more of!
2: Most Heartbreaking:
Malec photo booth memories.
After some behind-the-scenes shots of Harry and Matt were released showing the two in various adorable Sears Portrait-style poses, the fandom went abuzz with the idea that these looked a bit like photo booth pics. And we were right! Only the joy didn’t last for long, as this scene in context quickly turned into our Most Heartbreaking moment. We love knowing that these little private moments between Magnus and Alec can pop up at any time, but we really hope that they can get back to making new happy memories very soon.
3: Hero Moment:
Two-for-one zombie head-shot. Alec Lightwood, ladies and gentlemen.
The battle against Valentine’s Forsaken was already pretty badass (no one ever expects rune zombies, do they?). But this timely save from Alec totally hit the mark, oof! He isn’t considered the best archer in the Shadow World for nothing, folks. That was quite the impressive shot and it definitely earned him this week’s Hero Moment.
4: Biggest Awwwww:
Lightwood cuddles.
Not only was it a treat to get to see these two in action (Shadowhunters getting to do some shadowhunting!), this understated check-in between the Lightwood warriors really warmed our hearts. Izzy’s quiet, “Are you okay?” and Alec’s reassuring hug is exactly the kind of sibling love we can get behind (*looks pointedly at Jonathan Morgenstern*).
5: Most Swoon-Worthy:
Clace get their sparkle on.
We have got to give props to the most visually stunning moment of the episode. We already knew that Clary’s powers could make some astonishing runes. Multiply that by Jace’s abs and the undeniable power of love (and throw in some pure angel blood) and you’ve got yourself the Most Swoon-Worthy moment of this episode! Sure, shirtless cuddling isn’t exactly an orthodox tracking routine, but who needs orthodox when your commitment to sparkle-motion gives results?
6: Best Scene:
Two J.C.s enter. One J.C. leaves.
If we want to get very meta, you could say that Jace and Jonathan were battling more with the ghost of what Valentine did to them than they are with each other. More than the (rather beautifully choreographed) sword fight, what really got us about their face-off were the little things, like that hand wave as Jace requested a sword – which Jonathan, somewhat surprisingly, then gave him. There were also the verbal wounds thrown around which left us floored (“He made you spaghetti, too?” was just as much of a stab as any made with a blade). Dom and Will played off each other so well, we can’t help but hope this isn’t the last we’ll see of Jonathan.
Shadowhunters airs Mondays 8/7c on Freeform and Tuesdays internationally on Netflix.
