Last week’s episode of Freeform’s Shadowhunters featured lost mirrors, cool tattoos, eeeesh, incest, and more Morgenstern family drama than you can shake a stick at. You can read our full review here, but below are some bite-sized bests from episode 2×17.
1: Most Adorable:
Simon helps Max with his training.
It is handy having a friendly vampire on hand when you have a young Shadowhunter to train, isn’t it, Izzy? Simon’s stand-in performance during Max’s training session was hands down one of the most adorable moments we’ve seen so far on this show. Shadowhunters don’t get to be children for long and Simon…well, he’s going to be a bit of a kid forever. Maybe even the older Lightwoods will learn to relax and have a good time around him? For now, we can only hope that this cute friendship teaches this little Shadowhunter that Downworlders are not so bad and that some are downright fantastic.
2: Weekly Dose of Incest:
Why does this keep happening to Clary?
WHY IS THIS A TAG THAT WE NEED? It seems that of all the possible things in the world, incest has now become a staple trope on Shadowhunters. Of course, poor Clary can’t be blamed on any count since this is the second time “Sebastian” has made an unsolicited advance and she, you know, has no idea this guy is her brother. But we can’t help but notice a terrible pattern of brothers and brotherly types trying to mack on the girl! Who can forget the tense days of Clary and Jace’s attraction taking a weird turn when they thought they were related? But why stop there? If you consider that Luke has been a father to both Clary and Simon for their whole lives, well…that’s kind of a little weird, too? And now Jonathan has decided to show some disturbing version of brotherly love by…trying to get with his sister? Here’s to not keeping it in the family.
3: Best Scene:
Malec have a fight. It hurts, a lot.
Talk about sweet, sweet pain. Hurt as it might, this scene was glorious to watch. Our hearts started to break as soon as Alec’s delight at seeing Magnus turned to concern, and then realization. Oh, sweet little angel child, it is so much worse than missing dinner. What we truly loved, however, was how balanced this tense argument was. With no real wrong or right in sight, we were left with the stark reality that sometimes we can’t help but hurt the ones we love the most.
4: Voice of Reason:
Luke stops Magnus from smashing his entire apartment to bits.
Someone send the man a fruit basket for his efforts at keeping the peace! Luke is a Malec man through and through and we love him for it. Not only did his calm words attempt to stop the High Warlock from trashing the place, he also tried to remind him that Alec is young and trying his best. We hear you, Luke; we can only hope that Magnus hears you, too.
5: Hero Moment:
Dot saves Clary and Jace’s asses. Again.
Oh, Dot, Dot, Dot, will you ever be safe? It seems the friendly neighborhood warlock always ends up in the middle of Morgenstern family drama. Whether out of loyalty to Jocelyn’s memory or out of a sense of duty to not let the world get overrun by genocidal Morgensterns, Dot’s life was once more on the line and we’re terrified she might not make it out of this one! Stay safe, Dot, and please take a vacay.
Shadowhunters airs Mondays 8/7c on Freeform and Tuesdays internationally on Netflix.
