Need a quick run-down of last week’s Shadowhunters panel at San Diego Comic Con? We were there and we’re bringing you the goods! Check out our video of the full Shadowhunters’ San Diego Comic Con 2017 panel below, followed by some highlights you may have missed. And don’t forget to check out our exclusive pics from the panel and press room, and watch our roundtable interviews with Matt, Harry, and Isaiah; Kat and Dom; and Alberto and Em.
On What’s Coming Soon
The secret we all kinda guessed has now been confirmed – Sarah Hyland will be playing a more adult version of the Seelie Queen for two episodes this season.
In other cast news, we’ll be seeing a lot more of our very own Maia Roberts. Alisha Wainwright has been upgraded to a cast regular for Season 3!
Dominic Sherwood set our broship hearts alight with the news that Jace and Simon actually care about one another under all that Clary drama, and that their relationship is very important to the story moving forward.
For his part, Alberto Rosende talked about Simon’s Jewish faith and how important it is to both him and to his character. Speaking of our Daylighter, two new Alberto Rosende songs have dropped on an official six-track EP (details here!).
On the question of Luke and any potential romance, Todd only teased that there’d be a lot more Luke in Season 3. From the man himself, Isaiah mentioned that he really enjoyed Luke and Raphael teaming up to save Simon. We’re hoping we’ll get more of that neat Downworlder partnership soon. Honestly, Downworlders are where it’s at.
On Sizzy
Our vampire lothario, Alberto, seems on board for a little patience as far as Simon and Isabelle are concerned. “You can’t jump from one vamp to another vamp…you gotta give her time.” Good man, Alberto – the smartest and strongest of the Shadowhunters is worth waiting for!
But he didn’t stop there, praising the strength of Izzy’s character on every level: “The reason Isabelle is so strong is because we see those moments of doubt,” he said. “Strength isn’t the absence of weakness, it’s overcoming the weakness.” Fans, however, may not be as patient as dear Alberto.
Emeraude was asked whether we’d see any Sizzy action on-screen. Wisely, she turned the question towards Todd who gave an exciting answer: “Monday’s episode [2×17] has amazing Sizzy.” And it sure did!
On Malec
Malec is not just a fan-favorite ship. The High Warlock of Brooklyn and the Head of the New York Institute are the cast’s unanimous faves. Universally loved as they may be, it seems like there’s still some rough road ahead for our boys. A lot of strife seems to be coming from work stress – how much more #married can they get? Matt admitted that perhaps Alec could do a little better at balancing his work/home life, “When you have a tough job and put in a lot of hours at the office, it can be tough on the ones you love.”
For the other half of this beautiful love story, Harry told the crowd that Magnus was working on overcoming his past and learning to trust Alec. Music to our ears!
On Clace
Things don’t seem to be looking any simpler for this angelic duo either. After a bit of lighthearted blaming Clary for everything that ever happened to any character on the show (all in good fun!), both Kat and Dom admitted it was stormy skies ahead for our beloved Clace.
“It gets worse before it gets better,” Dom said about the pair, who apparently have a long way to go.
“There’s not a lot of happy for the rest of the season,” Kat cheerfully added. Wow, guys, any good news at all? Turns out there’s plenty if you love lots of twists and turns. After that incredible trailer footage, we’re onboard!
On Adapting the Books
Book fans can rest easy, the cities of glass and fallen angels are near. Our showrunners assure us that elements from City of Glass are soon to come. The new Season 3 writers were introduced and it was announced that Season 3A of Shadowhunters will be based on City of Fallen Angels. If you’re rusty on your book knowledge, go re-read now and start biting your nails about the plots to come!
Matt Hastings highlighted that they really try to give the show that NYC feel – we see it and we love it.
Some teases about beloved and despised characters to come: Tessa Gray (“Have patience,” is what we were told), Jordan is on the way, and someone by the name of Lilith. Hmm. Wonder who that is…
Harry said he’d love it if The Bane Chronicles were part of the show’s world. He and some of the cast also said they’d love to see Ragnor Fell return to the fold at some stage, perhaps for a flashback scene! Dom shared that he feels the pressure of portraying a Jace that book fans will love, while Matt shared that he enjoys reading fan’s character analyses to help with his portrayal of Alec. Don’t freak out, fam. But Matthew Daddario is possibly watching you.
Todd emphasized that the show is an adaptation which captures the “essence” of the books while creating something new.
Matthew Daddario Will Fight You
Matt Daddario has some strong and passionate feelings about his character and all characters in this show – the fandom understands, Matt!
Fan: “Do you feel protective over your characters?”
Matt: “Extremely so.”
Matt also really doesn’t like it when: “[…] people go online and say mean things about Alec, or Jace, or Magnus…” But Matt isn’t alone! Dom told fans that he’s more hurt when he sees hate about Jace than when he sees negative comments about himself!
