In early June, Freeform canceled the GLAAD-Award winning TV show Shadowhunters during a mid-season hiatus. Since its cancelation, this massive and worldwide fanbase has been working tirelessly in the hopes of securing a future for the beloved series. This New York Comic Con campaign is just the latest in a long series of impressive fan-funded and driven events. They have flown a plane banner over Netflix HQ, rented two billboards in Times Square, raised over $30,000 for various charities (see end of article), gotten a month-long subway billboard campaign in Seoul, had Pedicabs and bike billboards at SDCC, have 24 red double-decker buses in London bearing the “#SaveShadowhunters” message, and secured four additional People’s Choice Awards nominations for the show by write-in votes alone.
Following their triumph at San Diego Comic Con – where Shadowhunters was the fifth most tweeted about show despite having no official presence at the convention – fans plan to bring the #SaveShadowhunters message to New York Comic Con as well. They will be giving away Shadowhunters swag throughout the convention, have created Snapchat and Facebook photo filters, will be doing Amazon gift card giveaways (and will be giving out flyers explaining the contest rules), and have also purchased ad space on the display screens on the NY Waterway boats and terminals near the convention.
The movement’s Twitter presence will be heralded with the hashtag #ShadowhuntersTakeNYCC.
