Over the last two seasons of Shadowhunters, we’ve seen a number of characters come and go. But there has also been a few book characters whose names have been subtly dropped but haven’t quite made their on-screen debut yet. And after watching the Season 2B finale, we have a strong feeling that we may see some of these characters a lot sooner than we thought!
Beware: Minor book and potential Season 3 spoilers ahead. Proceed at your own risk.
Tessa Grey
The beautiful, strong, and well-known badass Tessa Grey is a warlock from The Infernal Devices trilogy. Tessa has been mentioned twice on the show so far to great fanfare and excitement – once in episode 1×04 “Raising Hell” and again in the infamous “Malec” episode, 1×12. According to Magnus, Tessa is currently at the central headquarters for warlocks, known as the Spiral Labyrinth.
We can’t wait to see this character be brought to life on-screen. Tessa has such a rich backstory and strong connections in the Shadow World. Going into Season 3, it doesn’t look like she will make an appearance anytime soon. But if she does, it will be one of the most anticipated character cameos this show will ever have.
When it does happen, we’ll be jumping around our living rooms for sure.
Jordan Kyle
Jordan, Jordan, Jordan…oh, Jordan.
In the world of the books, Jordan Kyle made his official entrance in City of Fallen Angels. However, on the show, Jordan is mentioned in episode 2×18 “Awake, Arise, or Be Forever Fallen,” when Maia confesses to Simon about the night she was attacked and bitten by her ex-boyfriend. Ugh, poor Maia. We just wanted to reach through the screen and give her a hug.
From a story perspective, we’re intrigued as to how the show will introduce this complex character. Jordan’s return is sure to have a huge effect on Maia, her new relationship with Simon, possibly Luke, and their pack. With Jordan on the show, it also opens up the possibility to learn more about the organization known as the Praetor Lupus.
For Jordan, the road to redemption will be long and rough. We’re sure that if and when he makes his on-screen debut, he will definitely have some explaining to do.
Jia Penhallow
Jia Penhallow is a book character who has been subtly mentioned once on the show so far. The Penhallows are related to the Verlac family and are close family friends of the Lightwoods, which is mentioned in episode 2×15 “A Problem of Memory,” when Isabelle jokes with Aline about how her mother always drags them to the Accords Hall for a Clave assembly every time she visits Alicante. Since Aline has been introduced on the show, it opens up the possibility of seeing more of her family members, such as Jia, make an appearance. And with Maryse going through such a hard time at the moment, it would nice for her to have a friendly face around.
Jem Carstairs
Jem!
This handsome, kind soul of a man is another character from The Infernal Devices trilogy. You may have heard Magnus briefly mention his friend Jem in episode 2×07 “How Are Thou Fallen,” when Magnus opened up to Isabelle about the dangers of yin fen and how addictive it can be, having seen Jem go through a similar thing. We love learning more about Magnus’ past and the friendships he’s kept, so we hope the show touches more on Magnus’ history with him and Jem’s backstory. We’d also love to go on and on about how great Jem is and talk about his strong connections to some of our favorite Shadowhunters, but we don’t want to spoil the series for you. It’s pretty epic.
Although Jem was mentioned in the last season, the possibility of him making an appearance is slim. But we wouldn’t mind seeing flashbacks of Magnus and Jem walking through London in the 1800’s. Just an idea, show.
Lilith
Last but certainly not least is Lilith, better known so far as “Mother.” This is one major character we are 100% sure fans will get to know a lot better in Season 3. Lilith is one fascinating character who causes a lot of chaos for our group of Shadowhunters in the City of Fallen Angels novel, of which next season looks to be pulling from. Not ringing a bell? You may remember her as the mysterious, blackened woman calling Sebastian her “son” in the Season 2B finale. Curiouser and curiouser.
As Shadowhunters continues to rack up more seasons – fingers crossed – the possibility of seeing these book characters come to life on the show only gets higher. Who are you most excited to see? Let us know over on Twitter!
Shadowhunters is available for streaming via Freeform for U.S. residents and internationally on Netflix. Shadowhunters returns with Season 3 in early 2018.
