Meet Zee! Also known as ‘ZeeArts,’ she is a 26-year-old artist from Malaysia. She spoke to us about creating art for the Lucifer and Overwatch fandoms.
Describe yourself in three words.
Enthusiastic, goofball, curious.
How long have you been creating art? What is your favorite medium?
I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember! Despite both of them not being artists themselves, my mother was the one who taught me basic drawing and my uncle encouraged it (almost unheard of in an Asian family, hey!).
My favorite medium is digital. I’ve been self-taught for a period of time before art college, and I love the convenience of it. I’ve dabbled in most other mediums, and despite enjoying inking for ‘Inktober,’ digital remains a firm favorite.
What fandoms have you been in and made art for?
My initial venture into fandom art was for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I’ve hopped through several fandoms since, but, currently, I’m quite happy in the Overwatch and Lucifer fandoms. I’ve been with Overwatch for more than three years now, and Lucifer has been the most recent.
Tell us about your process. How much planning is involved with each piece, and how long does it usually take you to do a typical drawing?
Usually, it’s a spur of the moment thing; though occasionally I have friends who feed me ideas. Despite how spontaneous most of them are, I do a lot of referencing and idea gathering for clothes, posing, etc. Sketches can take from 10-30 minutes depending on complexity; lining usually takes about 15 minutes or more; and the finishing – if I’m not paid for it – is wholly dependent on mood. Colors with line art can take up to 3-4 hours, and colors without lines about 6-8 hours. Backgrounds are a whole other beast altogether.
What do you find the most challenging to draw?
Feet! Hands, too, but I’m hopefully getting better at those. But I always find it hard to position the legs and feet. Despite working professionally as a background artist, my perspective work isn’t that great, but, like everything, it is a work in progress.
What do you love about Lucifer, and what inspired you to start drawing fanart for it?
I honestly love the dynamic between the two main characters! A badass detective who is good at her job, immune to the charms of the Devil. And Lucifer, who only has stars in his eyes for her but also, unfortunately, shoots himself in his foot out of paranoia… That’s a good combination for laughs and shenanigans (and angst)! I also adore the female friendships in the show, the supernatural aspects of it, and the character growth. Wings are also a big bonus.
Who is your favorite character to draw and why?
Mercy, from Overwatch! I tend to gravitate towards drawing girls more, as I always find them easier and more familiar. Mercy’s wing mechanism gives me a challenge, but she is the easiest to capture. Otherwise, Eve, or Lucifer.
Are there any artists that inspire you?
Plenty! Loish, Pascal Campion, Atey Ghailan (or snatti89), Marco Bucci…just to name a few! I also have friends in the art community who are just amazing at what they do and seeing their work is always an inspiration.
What has been your favorite work of fanart you have created? What do you love about it?
The one I did of K/DA Akali! Mostly because I’m still very in love with the music video… I’m not an animator, but I had fun learning how to do the glitch effect.
What has been the best part of your fandom experience so far?
The Lucifer fandom has been pretty sweet to me, despite the fandom size being a lot smaller than Overwatch. It took me a while to carve myself a corner in the Overwatch fandom that I can still enjoy to this day, but the Lucifer fandom has always been vocal in their support and interest in the things I put out. I enjoy being on the discord servers, chatting with creators and fans alike.
