This week’s episode of Freeform’s Shadowhunters featured a suspiciously perfect bromance, Luke continuing to be the team dad, and more than one close call. You can read our full review here, but below are some of our bite-size bests from episode 3×04.
1: Suspicious AF:
Bromancing the Vampire.
Simon is known for seeing the best in people, but he seemed particularly naïve this episode. When something seems way too good to be true, it usually is. The would-be epic bromance began with the classic “literally bumping into each other” trope and delivered Simon with the perfect roommate at the perfect time. Kyle just so happened to have a room available in a place filled with all of Simon’s favorite things, oh and did we mention it was rent controlled? Score? We think not. Spoiler alert: we already know this “Kyle” person is really Jordan Kyle (lying about your identity is another huge red flag). This whole scenario seemed Suspicious AF. Our suspicions were confirmed when Luke called and we learned that Simon had apparently been passed into the care of the “Praetor.”
2: Best Bonding Moment:
Luke is (still) in session.
It looks like everyone is getting their chance this season to have a life-changing sit-down with our resident Shadowhunter-turned-werewolf detective. Luke continued to do what he does best when Jace paid him a visit to ask about his mother. The subject of hereditary mental illness is a sensitive one and Luke handled it as such when he explained that Celine Herondale was “an amazing person who helped create another amazing person.” Even though it was a scary possibility for Jace to consider, Luke helped him see that a mental disorder does not define you. Sound advice paired with an uplifting compliment? Papa Luke knocks it out of the park again!
3: Best Boyfriend:
Magnus fusses over Alec.
“We’ll make it through this. Ok? One step at a time.” Season 3 has been spoiling us in the Malec department so far, making our time spent with them this week seem especially brief. But what their scenes lacked in length they made up for in feels. Alec was tormented by his own inability to help his Parabatai, but Magnus was by his side reminding him to eat, and offering his help along with a comforting touch. Best. Boyfriend. Ever.
4: Hero Moment:
Izzy and Clary stage a rooftop rescue.
Raphael’s experiments finally caught up with him and landed him in scorching hot water when Heidi managed to escape and exact her (seriously twisted) revenge. Team Clizzy was ever so efficient in their rescue efforts (that synchronized door-kick was seriously badass). After all, it’s not as if this is Clary’s first rooftop rescue – remember Ithuriel? If you ever find yourself chained to a rooftop, she’s your gal apparently.
5: Closest Call:
Morgan gets a “Get out of jail free of possession” card.
It was a tough call deciding between this and Raphael’s near death on the rooftop, but ultimately, we had to give it to Morgan. We were pretty sure Raphael was going to survive to un-live another day, but Morgan really seemed like a goner. Karma must be on Morgan’s side for all the good deeds she’s done because it’s not often that a mundane survives the Shadow World unscathed. Why did the Owl let her go? Will she become our token human? In any case, we are glad she’ll no longer be impersonating the girl from The Ring in the Institute’s basement. We get it, show. You’re spooky now.
Shadowhunters airs Tuesdays 8/7c on Freeform and Wednesdays internationally on Netflix.
