This week’s Malec-centric episode of Freeform’s Shadowhunters featured a heist, an awkward double date, and Malec saving the day. Needless to say, it was a blast (more so for some than others…). You can read our full review here, but below are some of our bite-size bests from episode 3×02.
1: Best Bonding Moment:
Luke adopts Izzy for the evening.
It was wonderfully touching to see Luke give some of his patented fatherly advice to Izzy, since she needs it the most right now. He always knows the right thing to say to make someone feel important. Over pizza and surveillance footage (great bonding material, who knew?), he offered his own story about how he overcame his guilt over joining the Circle. We just hope he got through to her.
2: Best Newcomer:
Lorenzo “not a glorified shuttle service” Rey.
At long last, we had the pleasure of meeting the new High Warlock, Lorenzo Rey (and we will never tire of the way his name rolls off of Magnus’ tongue). Javier Muñoz delighted us with a performance that ranged from charmingly egotistical one second to jealous and resentful the next. The way his defenses seemed to drop the moment someone showed the slightest bit of interest in him as a person…well, it was like a child showing off his new toys at Christmas. We cannot wait to find out more about the inner workings of this interesting (and supposedly devious) man.
3: Funniest Scene:
Malec heist and ham it up.
Matthew Daddario and Harry Shum Jr. had the opportunity to display their comedic chops this week. Harry, in particular, seemed to turn into a literal cartoon character (the image of him diving behind Lorenzo’s couch like a humpback whale gets even more hilarious the more times you watch it). And was Alec supposed to be flirting with Lorenzo? Whatever it was, Lorenzo fell for it! We haven’t seen such adorable distraction efforts since Season 1’s “Do you come here often?” Also, it appears that Malec have mastered both verbal and silent communication. Marriage skills: achievement unlocked!
4: Most Awkward:
Clace and Saia go on a double date, and it’s just as awkward as you’d imagine.
This is way beyond a love triangle now…who here hasn’t hooked up? This accidental double date may be the Most Awkward thing we have seen yet. Where do we begin? The biggest takeaway is that Jace is terrible at planning dates. Oh, how the communal tables have turned since the lesson in “How to Pick Up Girls 101” Jace gave to Simon last season. Clary and Maia weren’t doing all that shabby until Jace just had to interject with his knowledge about Maia’s pretty well-hidden butterfly tattoo. But now that all the cards are laid out on the table at this reservation-only restaurant, at least the chances of something like this happening again are less, right? Speaking of putting it all out there, “It’s only a matter of time before I sleep with him myself,” is not something you can just casually say, Simon! Color us intrigued.
5: Biggest Awwwww:
Jace takes a cue from Alec and spouts poetic love confessions.
This episode had some of the best Clace scenes on the show to date, and it was all because they were finally able to go on a proper (albeit intensely awkward) date and talk like two normal people. Clary’s insecurity prompted Jace to go all, “How do I love thee, Clary? Let me count the ways.” It was impossible not to “awwwww” during this moment.
6: Episode MVP:
Malec is out here saving everyone’s ass.
This episode Magnus and Alec were partying it up, sniffing sandalwood-scented shampoo (four times), breaking and entering, and still had time to save the day. We always love seeing Alec wear his leader cap, and whether he’s High Warlock or not, it’s clear that this HOTI works with Magnus Bane and Magnus Bane only. Seeing our favorite power couple blend warlock magic and angelic strength (we would like to take this moment to praise the Angel for that bicep rune) topped off with their special brand of competitive banter was everything we love about them all at once. They should save the day every episode, seriously.
Shadowhunters airs Tuesdays 8/7c on Freeform and Wednesdays internationally on Netflix.
