This episode of Freeform’s Shadowhunters featured the little first date that could, two characters starting down some conventional slippery trope slopes, an unfortunate parental reveal, and a whole lotta nope coming from the eldest Lightwood sibling. Check out some bite-size bests from episode 1×02.
1: Cutest Meet Cute:
Sizzy have their unofficial first date.
Everything about Sizzy’s first meeting was adorably mundane: Simon was at a loss for words and Izzy was so charmed by Simon’s nerdy hotness that she volunteered to watch over him personally. They then spent the entirety of the episode together, getting to know each other on what felt an awful lot like a completely innocent and normal first date…aside from, you know, the random supernatural occurrence here and there. Both Simon and Izzy busted out their best moves (which, in all actuality, are really their worst moves): Simon used his infamous “Lewis, Simon Lewis” pick-up line and Izzy “cooked” him breakfast. There was giggling, playful touching, and they were this close to sharing earphones. Doesn’t get much cuter than that!
2: Wild as Hell:
Alec is the Sass Master.
A noob Shadowhunter and her mundie friend are in the Institute? And now we’re going on unsanctioned missions to the City of Bones? Alec is not here for any of it. He was just about at the end of his short rope this episode while dealing with his silly siblings and their shiny new toys. A healthy dose of devil’s advocate is just smart soldiering, but suspecting Clary of being a spy for Valentine may have been taking it just a little too far.
3: Worst Day Ever:
Dot begins her life-in-peril streak.
When Dot’s contingency plan does not…go to plan, she tries to get a new one going, but that doesn’t work either because no one will listen to her. Hey, at least she’s alive…but she gets kidnapped and tortured by Valentine. And so begins the familiar pattern of Dot being in peril and the audience not knowing if she will make it to the next episode. In fact, as the series currently stands (about to begin Season 3), we have no idea if Dot is safe or not. At this point, we are starting to assume that she has nine lives.
4: Episode MVP:
The Soul Sword finally gives us some friggin’ answers.
We wanted some answers just as much as Clary did, and the Soul Sword delivered. Learning that Valentine was her father was definitely not something Clary wanted to hear, but at least it gave her and us some semblance of what the heck was going on! After going under the knife Shadow World-style, Clary was one step closer to understanding where she fit into the puzzle as well as one step closer to finding the Mortal Cup.
5: Most Kidnappable:
Simon begins his kidnapping streak.
Dot is not the only character to initiate a repetitive pattern this episode. After this episode, getting kidnapped becomes commonplace enough for Simon to wax meta about it in future episodes. Clearly, everyone just wants to spend time with our resident friendly nerd (and soon-to-be vampire). And while we’re at it, look, Izzy, we love you to death, but leaving him alone in a van was kinda sloppy, even if you did have him lock the door before you left. Oh, well, see you soon for your next Most Kidnappable award, Simon!
Shadowhunters is available for streaming via Freeform for U.S. residents and internationally on Netflix. Shadowhunters returns with Season 3 on March 20th, 2018.
