This week’s episode of Freeform’s Shadowhunters featured a shockingly gory angel-slaying, Malec and Clace breaking our hearts, and a whole lot of snooping. You can read our full review here, but below are some of our bite-size bests from episode 3×05.
1: Most Important Scene:
Underhill calls Alec an inspiration.
Alec is the Head of the Institute, but we (and Underhill) know that Alec really started being the leader of his wiser generation when he very publicly came out of the closet back in Season 1. Having another Shadowhunter thanking Alec for “paving the way for people like [him]” was this episode’s Most Important Scene for multiple reasons. Underhill’s words acknowledged the positive impact that one person being their authentic selves can have upon the lives of others. Alec needed to hear this and he also needed to know that he is not alone. Underhill also managed to give a voice to the fans, expressing what Alec Lightwood (and Malec) mean to those of us in the LGBTQ+ community.
2: Most Shocking:
Ithuriel gets his heart ripped out. NBD.
Oh hey, Ithuriel! We were just talking about you last week. We didn’t expect to see you. But never mind because YOU’RE DEAD! For a moment there, we thought maybe Ithuriel was really Lilith in disguise or something. But nope, it was him alright (in all his angelic glory) and Lilith (in her hideous dragon form) just had to hijack the divine summoning and rip out his heart. She sure knows how to send a message! Is he just “dead” or dead, dead, dead? We need answers, show!
3: Most Heartbreaking:
Malec opens Pandora’s box.
Speaking of things rearing their ugly heads, it was only a matter of time before the immortality conversation would angst up all of the domestic Malec bliss. Unfortunately, this is a necessary hurdle for these two to overcome. Still, there was no way to prepare ourselves for the pain. Alec went snooping into Magnus’ mystery box full of mementos from his previous mortal lovers, and it had Alec speculating about what kind of trinket would be put there as a reminder of him someday…and please make it stop, for the love of the Angel! But we can tell this discussion isn’t over yet if pouty-faced Alec has anything to say about it.
4: Voice of Reason:
Jace is Team Praetor.
“This guy almost runs you over, and then he just happens to have a room in his apartment, and that just happens to be full of all your favorite stuff.” This week, Jace was literally us last week when trying to talk some sense into Simon. He wasn’t exactly delicate about it (when is he ever?), but at least Jace got to the bottom of things sooner rather than later. Also, are B&E’s just part of the Lightwood family business now? Anyway, when Kyle owned up to being part of the Praetor Lupus (a secret organization of werewolves that helps Downworlders), Jace knew Simon was in good hands, explaining to an overreacting Simon that if someone is offering him help, he’d be a fool not to take it.
5: Biggest Game Changer:
Jace is all out of love (and so lost without Clary).
Up until this point, Jace had a romantic way out of Lilith’s control. But now that she has roofied his drink (she’s really not afraid to get her hands dirty, is she?) with some falling-out-of-love elixir, his love for Clary will no longer be able to interrupt their creepy cult meetings. Lilith is so close to achieving her goal of resurrecting her son, Jonathan, and this was the Biggest Game Changer in ensuring that happens. Is there some way to reverse the effects? Haven’t Clace suffered enough? Either way, this does not bode well for them (or the Shadow World).
Shadowhunters airs Tuesdays 8/7c on Freeform and Wednesdays internationally on Netflix.
