Shadowhunters 3×20 “City of Glass” was all about sacrifice. After an epic duel, Clary’s bond with Jonathan was broken and he invented “wing-slapping.” Asmodeus helped Magnus get his apartment back, but Maryse made Magnus realize what Asmodeus was really up to. Jordan stole the last vile of heavenly fire for Maia so she could live a normal life and when she refused, it was revealed that Jordan’s silver poisoning was far from cured. Meanwhile, Jonathan used the Morgenstern Sword to open a rift between Edom and Alicante, destroying the City of Glass. Magnus saved the day by sacrificing himself with a one-way trip to Edom to seal the rift, but not before proposing to Alec first.
1: #Popcorn Worthy Scene:
Things get stabby and glowy, and Alec gets “wing-slapped.”
The double fight between Jace, Alec, and Jonathan in one corner and Clary and Izzy in the other corner was grab-your-popcorn, edge-of-your-seat, epic movie quality stuff. Clary and Izzy engaged in a Jedi duel with the Morgenstern and Glorious Swords respectively (cue lightsaber SFX). When Alec got “wing-slapped” by Jonathan, it left us both horrified and giddy that his demonic wings were strong enough to take out a Shadowhunter. Jace then had the ultimate hero moment when he stabbed Clary in mid-air with Glorious, freeing her of the twinning rune. And Izzy had her own moment of heroism when she protected Simon from the exploding Glorious sword, taking shrapnel that would have killed our favorite Downworld nerd.
2: Most Romantic Shit We’ve Ever Seen:
In the midst of an apocalypse, Malec gets engaged…and it’s perfect.
Instead of candlelight, there were fire-breathing wraiths, but that didn’t dampen this romantic moment one bit. As the apocalypse raged upon Alicante, Magnus magicked two matching rings and asked Alexander Gideon Lightwood to marry him. Alec responded with, “Only if you’ll marry me, too,” because he’s just that adorable. They slipped the rings onto each other’s fingers (*insert some serious swooning sounds here*) and sealed it all with a kiss as explosive as the actual explosions surrounding them. That’s some pretty devastatingly Romantic Shit.
3: Episode MVP:
When the world is ending, Magnus Bane saves the day, as usual.
There’s no limit to what Magnus will sacrifice for those he loves. With the Morgenstern Sword destroyed, the open rift between Edom and Alicante could only be closed if Magnus used the power his father said he was capable of and fused his magic with Edom, which meant a one-way trip to Edom – the one place he never wanted to be. But he did it anyway…because he’s Magnus. If it weren’t for him, Idris (and probably the world – let’s be real) would be no more and everyone would be dead. Can we get this man a crown? Because he is the King of MVPs, not to mention Edom.
4: Best Parent Award:
Nothing gets past Mama Lightwood.
Maryse was not about to accept Alec’s vague explanation for why he broke up with Magnus. As she marched to “Lorenzo’s” loft, she had her game face on and was determined to get to the bottom of what really happened. We love to see Mama Lightwood fight for her boys! Once Maryse saw that Magnus had his magic back, it didn’t take long for her to figure out what Alec meant when he said the breakup was the only way Magnus could be “whole” again. Thanks to Maryse, Magnus finally emerged from his heartache haze and saw the truth.
5: Most Unexpected Move:
Magnus sends his father to Limbo Town. Let’s get ready to LIMBO!
Asmodeus almost won us over… Almost. Asmodeus did his best to earn Dad!Points by buying Magnus a pretzel snack and helping him get his apartment back. He turned Lorenzo into a chameleon (that’s just gold!). However, once Magnus realized Asmodeus was manipulating him, he pulled off the Most Unexpected Move of all when he portaled Asmodeus into perpetual limbo instead of banishing him back to Edom. We did not see that one coming.
