Shadowhunters 3×15 “To the Night Children” was full of moral conundrums. Can we punish the wicked by our own hand? And if we do something horrible to a person who is horrible, do we deserve punishment as well? Also, if your boyfriend gets jealous and you talk about it right away, are we allowed to still think it’s kind of adorable? We’re getting really philosophical this week. Here are some of the tidbits we can’t stop thinking about!
1: Smuggest Boo:
Alec really got a kick out of Magnus’ first real brush with jealousy.
There isn’t a whole lot of light-heartedness going on for the majority of these characters right now, so a little bit of smug teasing from Alec when Magnus failed to mask his jealousy about the “handsome” Underhill is just what we ordered. Of course, jealousy can be an ugly thing, but it can also be a sweet ego boost so long as everything gets cleared up nice and quick – which is what happened in this case (before everything inevitably went right back to life or death). We’re glad that our boys are still sharp on those open lines of communication, that Magnus accepts that Alec can vent to his friends if he needs to, and that little sparks of jealousy can be extinguished with copious amounts of love and respect.
2: Episode MVP:
Maia gets justice for the pack.
As sad as it is to see Tessa Mossey go, it was kind of wickedly awesome to see Maia slay Heidi after all of the havoc and horror she spread around the city. No one messes with Maia’s pack (or Simon) and gets away with it. Sure, as Simon pointed out, the whole situation is kind of morally grey. Alec gave Heidi a fair chance (even though she didn’t deserve it). But we, as viewers, knew she was guilty, so we’re going to stand by Maia’s clever vigilante justice. #SeeYouInHellHeidi
3: Hardest Goodbye:
Izzy and Raphael break our hearts.
On the other side of the coin, we have Raphael who…yeah, did some pretty messed up stuff and got away with it. But he tried to make up for it by devoting himself to community service (healthy) and punishing himself with a daily penance of holy water (not so healthy). As much as we and Izzy love Raphael, Alec wasn’t necessarily in the wrong when he pointed out that Raphael’s arrest was merited. Jeez, Alec had to make all the difficult decisions this episode (heavy is the head and all). And Raphael agrees – because, of course he does. Before he was put away, Raphael and Izzy shared a heartbreaking goodbye and thank God – according to showrunner Todd Slavkin – it’s not going to be the last we see of him, because that would just be way too cruel!!
4. Worst Cliffhanger:
Well, that cute moment took a turn…
Throughout the episode, it was no secret that Magnus’ temporary residence at the Institute was not a comfortable setup. The Shadowhunters were like, “Ummm…” and Magnus was like, “Ummm…” and while Alec seemed quite pleased with the arrangement, he also wanted Magnus to feel comfortable in an uncomfortable place. So it was no surprise really that when the idea of Magnus getting a new place came up, the happy twist was Alec proposing (calm down; we’re not there yet) to live together…again. Only unlike last time, Magnus is ready to take that leap with Alec, given there is appropriate closet space for his extensive wardrobe. Happiness, joy, and confetti – Malec are moving in together! If only we could have nice things.
Not a moment later, Magnus starts coughing up blood and practically convulsing in pain, crying out in his native Indonesian. Instead of a bowtie ending, we got an angsty cliffhanger and quite honestly, the angst-lover within is HERE. FOR. IT.
