Shadowhunters has finally returned. The 3B premiere, “Lost Souls,” proved itself worth the (excruciatingly long) wait as it gave us some poignant moments with all of the characters. From Clary and Jonathan’s hijinks in Siberia to the chaotic return of Iris Rouse, there was no shortage of drama or high stakes. We also were treated to an insightful journey into Magnus’ memories via some blink-and-you-miss-it flashbacks (here’s to hoping we get to revisit those later).
While the entire episode was pretty amazing, there were a few moments that stood out to us. Check out our bite-sized bests!
1: MVPF: Most Valuable Parental Figures:
Magnus and Alec are in Full-Dad Mode.
With Magnus Bane’s magic out of commission, Alec “the poet” Lightwood is pulling out all the stops to make him feel better, putting all other boyfriends to shame. But his boyfriend skills play second fiddle to what we’re calling Malec’s Full-Dad Mode. Magnus and Alec are out here campaigning for world’s best uncle/godparent/vague Parental Figures as attested by Madzie’s excitement at getting to spend the night, but their heroic efforts to protect her from her more nefarious “nana” really gives them their win of the week. From reading Dr. Seuss to putting their lives on the line to protect her, we think they’ve nailed this whole ‘parental figure’ thing. Here’s our wish out into the universe that we get to see more Dad Malec!
2: Biggest Heartbreak:
Jace is lost in the pit of despair. Send help.
While we saw everyone’s grief on display this week and all the different ways they mourned for Clary, we have to give this week’s Biggest Heartbreak to Jace. While we’re at it, we’re also giving huge props to Dom Sherwood for bringing the depths of Jace’s despair to life with such power and conviction. Even though we know that Clary is well enough alive and kicking, it was impossible not to feel Jace’s heartache along with him. We also were treated to some poignant scenes with both Isabelle and Alec as they each tried to help Jace heal and survive the pain of Clary’s loss.
3: Twistiest Twist:
Clary and Jonathan take “sibling bonding” to a whole ‘nother level
In a cool twist on a twist from book to show, it turns out that Jonathan’s devilish existence is tied to his sister, Clary, rather than his kind-of-adoptive brother Jace. We are in love with this change, and absolutely love the dramatic way it was revealed at the end of the episode. Clary does love stabbing her male relatives, but she got a bit more than she bargained for this time when Jonathan’s wounds quickly were mirrored on her own body. Ouchie. Sometimes it pays to be cutthroat, Clary, and other times, it bites you in the ass. We can’t wait to see how this new blood bond changes things!
Those are our top takeaways for the week, hit us up on Twitter and share yours!
