This episode of Freeform’s Shadowhunters featured a surprise comedy sketch, good deeds, bad flirting, un-smooshing things from paper, and a hard-learned lesson about answering phone calls from your friends. Check out some of our bite-size bests from episode 1×07.
1: Funniest Scene:
Clary and Jace get their improv on.
Since using a glamour would have attracted the attention of the demons and Circle members swarming the NYPD, Clary and Jace had to come up with a plan on the fly to get to the Mortal Cup. With a well-timed slap and a few choice words, they were able to convincingly pass themselves off as lovers in a toxic relationship; crappy apartment, cheating boyfriend, matching tattoos – the works. It was really refreshing to see Clace have some fun for a change. And watching Jace get escorted out by security guards while shouting, “I have rights!” was just the perfect way to end this episode’s Funniest Scene.
2: Episode MVP:
Izzy looks out for everyone.
Covering for her truant brother (who had been out drinking cocktails with Magnus Bane until the wee hours of the morning) when their father came to call him for duty already earned Izzy a spot on this list. But she went above and beyond this episode with multiple selfless acts that demonstrated how much she cares about her family and their happiness. Between trying to shoulder some of “the family heat” by transforming her image into something more “respectable” and going ahead to fend off demons when Clace wanted to talk at the worst possible time, Izzy had her hands full this episode being the supportive friend and sibling. And she pulled it off splendidly.
3: Biggest Fail:
Alec continues to be a terrible liar.
“You come here often?” says Alec to the woman who works there. Where did he even pick up that line? When given the task of serving as “the distraction,” Alec pulled it off with all of the grace and subtlety we have come to expect from him: absolutely none at all. Considering that she was very much not his type, this plan was doomed from the beginning. After utterly failing at being the distraction, he ended up creating it instead by spilling water all over her desk. Smooth. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: the boy is hopeless when it comes to pretending anything!
4: Badass Moment:
No one puts Clary in a corner!
Are all of Clary’s special abilities reliant on her emotions? All it took was a few scorpion-like demons to corner her and she was able to un-smoosh the Mortal Cup from the tarot card (one of her more underrated abilities in our opinion). Both this and the heart-stopping, suspenseful moment where she bested the demon glamoured as Jace were proof that she could hold her own as a Shadowhunter. Even Alec was impressed! And now we can say that getting the Mortal Cup was finally in the cards for them (sorry, we had to; it’s the Kat McNamara influence).
5: Most Pivotal Moment:
Answer Simon’s phone calls, for the love of G–.
Simon had been having a weird time the past couple episodes – what with the kidnapping and the constant hallucinations… At least his sister and mom were there for him. But they definitely were not the ideal people to help him through this particular blood-addled crisis. What he really needed was for Clary to stop ignoring his calls (seriously, why does no one answer their phones on this show?). Clary gave him the runaround all episode, but this final intercepted call (thanks to a rather rude assist from Jace) led Simon to return to Camille at the Hotel Dumort. And we all know how well that went for him. Let this be a lesson learned: answer your phone once in a while – especially in the Shadow World!
Shadowhunters is available for streaming via Freeform for U.S. residents and internationally on Netflix. Shadowhunters returns with Season 3 on March 20th, 2018.
