This episode of Freeform’s Shadowhunters featured Alec’s Shadowhunter reflexes and Shadowhunter flexes, a heartbreaking visit with Mrs. Lewis, and a bad time for Simon no matter how you slice it. Check out some of our bite-size bests from episode 1×08.
1: Badass Moment:
Alec probably should be HOTI.
“That reaction time was abysmal…except for you.” Even though it was only Lydia glamoured as Valentine, it was comforting to know that if the real deal ever did decide to just casually walk into the Institute, Alec would be all over that; and still find the time to tuck his little brother safely out of harm’s way. An early sign that he was Head of the Institute material (a hottie HOTI, if you will), this Badass Moment is one of many where we can confidently say that Alec’s got this.
2: Most Heartbreaking:
This devastating moment where Simon’s mom makes us (and Clary) cry.
When Jace knocked the Speak-No-Evil Monkey from the Wise Monkey Trio off the bookshelf to stop Clary from saying too much (we see what you did there, show), we were unprepared for Elaine to go on and rip our hearts out with how much her “little monkey” means to her. We don’t blame Clary for being swayed into doing whatever it took to keep Simon “alive.” Although, can we talk about how her original plan to spin some story about him getting in an accident and being unable to return was woefully underdeveloped?
3: Least Amount of Chill:
Malec have it bad for each other.
In general, Alec tends to have zero chill whatsoever about anything in his life, but when it concerns Magnus, he has the Least Amount of Chill. He was incapable of hiding his admiration for the warlock when he heard that Magnus would be making an appearance at the Institute (“Quite magical,” Alec? Really?). And we are pretty sure that Alec ending up conveniently shirtless and sweaty in the training room was a strategic move on his part. Intentional or not, that stunt had quite the effect on Magnus, who certainly did nothing to hide his admiration of the runed and chiseled abs that he had walked in on. Malec were fooling exactly no one this episode. Guys, get a room. No, seriously…please, get a room.
4: Worst Day Ever:
Being dead is, like, the worst.
Simon spent this episode dead while the people who got him into this mess decided whether he should be turned into a vampire, staked through the heart and truly killed, or have his soul trapped for eternity (for *dun, dun, dun* dramatics). No matter what direction this scenario went, Simon was guaranteed to have the Worst Day Ever. Even though Clary’s ultimate decision meant we were able to keep our lovable nerd, Simon’s life as he knew it was changed forever.
Shadowhunters is available for streaming via Freeform for U.S. residents and internationally on Netflix. Shadowhunters returns with Season 3 on March 20th, 2018.
