This week’s episode of Freeform’s Shadowhunters featured two queens playing a deadly game of catch-up, Clary taking the Shadow World equivalent of a lie detector test, and an absolute onslaught of Lightwood sibling feels. You can read our full review here, but below are some of our bite-size bests from episode 3×08.
1: Most Iconic Line:
“Three go in, three come out.”
Alec and Izzy’s journey into Jace’s troubled mind saw the return of “the flashback kids” and a powerful reminder of the closeness shared by the Lightwood siblings. The line “Three go in, three come out,” first spoken by the younger version of Jace, was instantly iconic, and when repeated by adult Izzy, packed an impactful punch directly in our feels. Nothing can stand in the way of these three looking out for one another, which is why this line perfectly captures what it means to be a Lightwood. It also added to the devastation we all felt when Alec and Izzy were ultimately unable to keep their promise about not letting Lilith take Jace again.
2: Least Shocking Betrayal:
The Seelie Queen spills the tea at the “tea party.”
The Queen of Edom and the Seelie Queen shared screen time this week and it appeared that Lilith had the upper hand (with a palm full of hellfire at the ready to bring down upon her mini highness). But the Seelie Queen, as always, was thinking several steps ahead and gave up the location of our heroes in exchange for her own safety. Who’s shocked?
3: Stand-Out Performance:
Dominic Sherwood dives into Jace’s inner torment.
Dom really flexed his acting muscles this week with his portrayal of the destruction Lilith has caused inside of Jace’s mind. His performance ranged from broken and scared, as Alec encountered Jace trapped in a murderous cycle, to desperate and hopeless, as Jace begged his siblings to end his misery. Not to mention how much Dom made us want to punch him in the face as the Owl (many of the insults were improv on his part; pity the one about Matt being too tall to be a Shadowhunter was cut). And he delivered another perfect tearful Parabatai hug that had us longing to get the real Jace back even more than we already did.
4: Badass Moment:
Clary stands up to the Clave.
Clary faced the intimidating combination of the Clave, plus some Silent Brothers, and the truth-extracting powers of the Soul Sword, and she did it all solo. We were impressed with the strength of her resolve when she confessed the truth (no Soul Sword necessary) and stood by her choice to use Raziel’s wish to bring Jace back from the dead. In this scene, we learned that Clary’s only regret was leaving Jace vulnerable to demon possession and that she was glad to have rid the world of something powerful enough to cause Downworld genocide. And given what we’ve seen so far of the Clave, we have to agree that that kind of power in the wrong hands is a very scary thought indeed.
5: Biggest Game Changer:
Lilith takes Jace back into her clutches.
Guys, we were so close. One second longer and Alec and Jace’s hands would’ve touched and we would’ve had our OG Jace back. One. Measly. Second. But Lilith had impeccable timing (thanks in large part to the Seelie Queen) and managed to sink her angel-slaughtering, Seelie-murdering, Magnus-choking demon claws back into Jace. Now that Lilith has taken back the game, who knows how much more damage she can cause?
Shadowhunters will return with Season 3B later this summer.
