Meet Rachel! Also known as ‘rhymewithrachel,’ she is a 21-year-old artist from Canada. She took some time to speak with us about her love for both the Good Omens book and series and the joy of drawing “goofy dancing.”
Describe yourself in three words.
Candid. Imaginative. Sociable.
How long have you been creating art? What is your favorite medium?
I think I’ve been drawing on walls since I was old enough to hold a pencil, but I really started taking art seriously when I was around 13. I bought my first tablet (a used 4”x6” wacom) in 2010, and digital has been my favorite medium ever since.
What fandoms have you been in and made art for?
I tend to drift from fandom to fandom every couple months, sometimes returning to one after several years. While there have been a lot, the fandoms I’ve contributed to most are probably: Sonic, MCU, Haikyuu, Naruto, Cowboy Bebop, and, currently, Good Omens! I’m probably forgetting some though.
Tell us about your process. How much planning is involved with each piece, and how long does it usually take you to do a typical drawing?
I spend a huge amount of time researching and looking at inspiration for clothes, lighting, and shoes (especially shoes). I love fashion, and it’s so fun to explore trends throughout history! This phase usually takes more time for me than actually finishing the drawing!
For personal art and fanart, a completed drawing usually takes me up to four hours. I try to embrace a more ‘messy’ style, rarely hitting the undo button or using the eraser tool, and I truly believe Bob Ross was right when he said ‘there are no mistakes, only happy accidents.’
I also draw fairly quickly – so if a piece is taking too long, I tend to just leave it and move on to something else.
The artwork I do for jobs can take me anywhere from a day to a month to finish, mostly because I’m much more meticulous when it comes to making art for other people.
What do you find the most challenging to draw?
Any kind of indoor background is very challenging for me, lots of straight lines there.
How did you first hear about Good Omens, and why did you decide to watch it?
I read Good Omens for the first time when I was 14 or 15, and it has remained my favorite book ever since! One of the first artworks I ever posted on Tumblr was Good Omens fanart. The new show really delighted me, and it drew me right back into the fandom after all these years.
What is your favorite scene from Good Omens and why?
My favorite moment in the book was always the part where Crowley and Aziraphale were ambushed by paintballs. In the show, my favorite scene was easily the whole Episode 3 cold-open. So many fantastic costumes and fun moments! That, or the dance sequence.
What do you love about Good Omens, and what inspired you to start drawing fanart for it?
I love fashion, wings, religious imagery, and character dichotomies. Good Omens has that all, really.
What has been your favorite work of Good Omens fanart you have created? What do you love about it?
I really enjoyed making this piece. It was fun to play around with their wings, and goofy dancing is one of my favorite things to draw. It’s definitely not my best artwork technically, but I don’t think that matters much.
What has been the best part of your fandom experience so far?
Just talking about characters, theories, jokes, etc. with people who are all passionate about the same thing as I am. There really isn’t anything warmer than sharing something you love so much with people who love it equally.
