Meet Maria! Known as ‘Mariemarion,’ she is a 25-year-old artist and fandom member from Mexico.
Describe yourself in three words.
Solitary. Patient. Creative.
How long have you been drawing?
Since I was a little kid. Anime and manga were a strong influence; they still are. I went to art school, but I learned almost everything I know on my own and by drawing every day. Practice is very important in order to improve. It’s always fun to see how my drawings have improved because even in a short period of time, you can make great advances.
What kind of medium or equipment do you use?
I usually draw on paper, or on whatever I have on-hand. Digitally, for cleaning and coloring, I use a Bamboo Wacom and work with Photoshop CS6.
How did you get involved in the Shadowhunters fandom?
It was unexpected and fairly recent. I remember my little sister mentioning the movie, but it didn’t catch my attention at the time. Then, a writer I follow on Facebook was talking a lot about Malec, but I still knew nothing about the show. It was in December of last year, when I was watching videos on YouTube, that I came across a Malec fan video. I watched it out of curiosity. There was no turning back after that; it was destiny. I binge-watched the first season, and I was so excited when I heard there was going to be a second season (airing on my birthday!) a few days later. Then I ended up reading the whole book series in record time. It was fun to spot all the big differences between the books and the show (although I love them both). This is the first time I’ve ever been so invested in a show. I’ve been so impressed by the characters, the cast, the music, everything.
Who is your favorite character to draw and why?
Magnus was the first character I ended up actually drawing (he stole my heart). I wanted to explore his character; there are just so many facets to him. He’s such a deep character with darkness in his past, pain in his veins, and yet, he’s also eager for love. Can you tell that I’m constantly thinking about Magnus? Also, I have a weakness for magical men in fancy suits. I would like to draw other characters, too, besides just Magnus and Alec. I swear I’ll find the time to do it soon.
What ships do you ship, and why you love them so much?
I know this isn’t an original answer, but I have to say Malec. Magnus and Alec’s love is so pure and their relationship development is so real. They break down each other’s walls and share their fears with each other. I love the other relationships on the show as well; all I want is their happiness. They are like my children and I want to protect them. Other ships that I like are Jimon, because their interactions are the best and the funniest, and I can’t wait to see them be friends, and Sizzy; we all are waiting for Sizzy, right?
What has been your favorite episode of Shadowhunters and why?
Honestly, I can’t choose just one episode as my favorite. I think each episode has a moment that takes my breath away, that makes me sigh, that makes me laugh and cry. I love how every character has had their moment. I can’t hate anyone, even Sebastian (although Valentine is another story).
What has been the best part of your fandom experience so far?
The truth is, I am someone who is afraid of being a part of something like fandom. Especially as an artist who does fanart. I’m pretty insecure and I’m always afraid that whatever I do is going disappoint people. However, I’ve received a warm welcome and for the short time I’ve been here, and it’s been great. It is always satisfying when someone likes what you do, and it makes you think it’s worth sharing what you love. I have to thank all those who have liked and shared my art. Greetings!
