This episode of Freeform’s Shadowhunters featured the Malec first date that wasn’t, more kidnap and rescue action featuring (surprise!) Simon, and some bloody werewolf politics. Check out some of our bite-size bests from episode 1×05.
1: Biggest Cockblock:
Clary freaking Fairchild, so help us…
Do you guys realize that Malec’s first date could have happened as early as this episode? Magnus wasted no time in calling Alec and asking him out for drinks, to which Alec actually agreed. He even said that the idea “sounds fun” (Alec Lightwood having fun?). But then Clary just had to go sneaking off and throwing a wrench into their plans! From here, things just snowballed like crazy and it would be a full season until Malec got to go on that date! We know we can’t blame Clary for everything, but let us at least take some time to mourn this early first date that could have been.
2: Most Kidnappable:
Simon should join a kidnapping rewards system.
“This…again? Again?!” At this stage, we are thinking Simon should get a rewards card – third kidnapping comes with a free mousepad! This time, however, he was a little stronger and smarter, busting himself out of his restraints and calling Clary’s cell phone, which was luckily in the possession of the other Shadowhunters (amateur hour on the part of his kidnappers for letting him keep his own phone). With Jace’s encouragement, Simon was even able to find key information about his whereabouts and figure out a way to create a diversion so that he could be successfully rescued. At least he is learning.
3: Hero Moment:
In an epic twist, Shadowhunters has no time for traditional gender roles.
The way Izzy coiled her whip around the bars of the window and tore them from their hinges was a true Hero Moment for her, almost as if she had just scaled a castle tower in a fairytale. Our hero! And of course, there was no shortage of playful banter between Simon and Izzy, either. But is now really the time, guys?
4: Episode MVP:
Luke levels up and saves the day.
Up until this point, Luke had been saving the day behind the scenes around the clock, ensuring that Clary remained safe from the Circle and that the secrets of the Shadow World remained hidden from prying mundane eyes. When Clary’s life was in danger, Luke stepped up to challenge his Alpha in a bloody scrap. He managed to save her and her friends and rise up in the ranks as the new Alpha. We’re still a little confused as to how a werewolf bite is poisonous to werewolves, but we’ll save that discussion for another day… Well done, Luke; you are the true Episode MVP.
Shadowhunters is available for streaming via Freeform for U.S. residents and internationally on Netflix. Shadowhunters returns with Season 3 on March 20th, 2018.
