We are kicking off our first Halloween-themed week in our #31DaysOfHalloween with Zombie Week! From gore to romance to the last Twinkie on Earth, we’ve selected a few of our favorite movies about the walking dead for your viewing pleasure.
Zombieland (2009)
Synopsis: A shy student trying to reach his family in Ohio, a gun-toting tough guy on a mission to find the last Twinkie, and a pair of sisters attempting to get to an amusement park join forces to travel across a zombie-filled America.
Why it’s good: This is the zombie movie for those who don’t watch zombie movies and those who love the genre alike. Zombieland is fun all the way through, except for when it’s scary, and those bits when you end up crying about Twinkies. But otherwise, it’s wall-to-wall, double-tapping-fun!
Where to watch it: YouTube, Amazon Prime, Google Play, Vudu, iTunes, STARZ
Pontypool (2008)
Synopsis: A radio host reports on the possible outbreak of a deadly virus which infects the small Ontario town he is stationed in.
Why it’s good: The particular way the virus in this story spreads is only one of the many original takes that Pontypool offers to the zombie genre while still serving up plenty of flesh-chomping gore. The see-saw of wit and poignancy makes for a totally enthralling watch. Do yourself a favor and don’t Google more details; just watch it and take the indie ride.
Where to watch it: iTunes
The Girl with All the Gifts (2016)
Synopsis: A scientist and a teacher living in a dystopian future embark on a journey of survival with a special young girl named Melanie who may hold the key to humanity’s future.
Why it’s good: Like all the best movies in the zombie genre, this one is ripe with poignant social commentary. It’s still full of gore and action to go with your existential questions though, so you should definitely give this surprisingly beautiful film a go.
Where to watch it: iTunes, YouTube, Google Play, Vudu, Amazon Prime
Warm Bodies (2013)
Synopsis: After a highly unusual “zombie saves still-living girl from an attack” meet-cute, the two form a romantic relationship that sets in motion events that might transform the entire lifeless world.
Why it’s good: Usually, a film described as “a Romeo and Juliet story” elicits groans from anyone who can tell what a toxic relationship those two hormonal kids had – but what if it’s Romeo and Juliet in reverse? A journey from a tragic un-death to the heart-pounding vibrancy of first love makes for a hilarious, heartwarming, and super fun movie.
Where to watch it: YouTube, Amazon Prime, Google Play, Vudu, iTunes
