Basic Stuff Magazine was at Comic Con Amsterdam on the weekend of September 1st and 2nd, where they had some great guests including Lucifer’s Aimee Garcia. Here are some of the highlights from Aimee’s panels with insight on some behind-the-scenes shenanigans and some scoop on Lucifer Season 4!
On Surprise Hugs and Being a Fangirl
Aimee gave a little behind-the-scenes tidbit with a reveal that the hug between her character Ella Lopez and Lucifer when they first met was unscripted. Aimee came up with the idea beforehand but didn’t tell Tom Ellis about it because she wanted his reaction to be genuine. She was worried at first that she might’ve gotten fired over it, had Tom reacted in a bad way. Luckily it all worked out in the end. “The cameras roll… and when he said ‘hello,’ I kinda hug him, and he was, like, in Lucifer mode – that’s how good of an actor he is – he was completely uncomfortable, and then that set our relationship up forever and that became like an instrumental part of who Ella is. So, I love that, because right away, you’re like, ‘I know who this girl is, she’s a girl that – she’s completely gonna invade my personal space.’ With love, with love!”
Aimee thinks that Ella’s greatest contribution to the show (besides her hugs) is that she doesn’t judge herself or others, as well as her light, joy, and humor.
On set, Aimee has been dubbed “The Avatar of the Fans” because she’s a fan herself. She lets them know whether she thinks fans are going to love or hate something, from details like clothing to events in a scene. “Even when I see Tom and Lauren [German] together before a scene, I’ll come in and be like, ‘You guys look so cute together,’” she said. “And then I realize ‘Oh my god I’m fangirling on my own show!’”
Getting emotional about Deckstar
“One of my favorite moments is when Chloe sees the scars from Lucifer’s wings and she touches them really tenderly, and it made him really uncomfortable,” Aimee said. “I loved that moment because he was exposing his – according to him – ugliest part of himself, and she delicately – God, I can’t believe I’m getting all emotional – it’s like when you show someone your deepest, darkest, scariest self, right? In his case, it was that scar – and the person loves you so much, and they’re like, ‘It’s okay,’ and not only do they say, ‘It’s okay,’ she touches him in such a way that it was almost like her hands were kissing his scars. And that really – I love that moment ‘cause Tom did such a good job at feeling like he was really exposed and I really felt for him. We all have parts of our self that we want to hide, right? And what happens when you really, really, really, really like someone and you show them the part that you really, really, really, really don’t like about yourself and that person…doesn’t care? That’s so touching and moving, and that really stuck with me.”
Season 4: Butts, Tequila, and Romance
Now that Chloe Decker knows that Lucifer is the actual Devil, Ella will fill the position that Chloe was in before where Lucifer tells her he’s the Devil and she won’t believe him: “So now Lucifer, this season, gets to be, to Ella, ‘I’m the King of Darkness, I’m the Fallen Angel, I’m all this stuff,’ and instead of rolling her eyes, Ella gets to play like, ‘That’s right, buddy. You’re gonna win an Oscar one day. That commitment, method acting, incredible! You’re an incredible actor.’” Aimee thinks that once her character does find out the truth, that she wouldn’t judge him, and would see Lucifer more as a fallen angel rather than as a sinister monster: “I think she would hug him, forgive him, and then be like, ‘I’ve got a lot of questions.’ And they would be drinking tequila because Ella loves tequila.”
Speaking of tequila, Ella’s wild side may come out to play and she might be in a bit more trouble this season because she’s starting to lose her faith in God over what happened with Charlotte Richards. And we will also see more of Aimee dancing!
We may see Ella get some romantic action this year because Aimee specifically requested it, now that she’s recently single in her own personal life. But Aimee doesn’t know if this love interest will be a man or a woman (the showrunners only confirmed that a love interest would be in her future).
They’re looking into the options for a musical episode because Tom is dying to do one, and luckily, showrunner Ildy Modrovich would love to write one! Lauren German (who plays Chloe Decker) apparently “has the voice of an angel,” but never sings (and she’d kill Aimee for even just revealing this). Although a musical episode won’t be happening just yet, we will get to see Tom Ellis sing “a great song” in front of an orchestra in the Season 4 premiere.
In terms of changes to the show now that it’s moving from FOX to Netflix, Aimee had this to say: “I will say you will see Tom Ellis’ butt!” Other than that little bit of juicy information, the show will remain pretty much the same, because Netflix has said that they don’t want to change anything about the show that people love enough to save. Aimee is also excited that the episodes will have more room to breathe, with scenes not being cut to fit a certain time frame (since there are no commercials on Netflix). She hopes this means that some of the little extra gestures and ad-libs she and the other actors add to a scene will no longer be left on the cutting room floor.
On the #SaveLucifer campaign
Aimee, of course, had some lovely words for the dedicated #SaveLucifer fan campaign that resulted in Netflix saving the show: “You guys, are…BOSS.”
“I felt like a dragon slayer [during the campaign]. I was out there with Tom. And finally, I go, ‘Tom, do we look like desperate actors that can’t get another gig?’ and Tom is like, ‘No, the fanbase is really fervent, we should do this!’ And so we did, and I Wonder Woman-ed it up!”
She said it was really satisfying coming back to work because it felt like, “‘THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN!’ To have the people fight for you and have it come from this grassroots effort is so much more fulfilling. It’s really quite humbling.”
