With another season of Shadowhunters done and a few more months of hiatus to stare in the face, naturally one begins looking to the possibilities of the future. And after the emotional road-bumps faced by our favorite supernatural power couple, High Warlock Magnus Bane and Nephilim leader Alec Lightwood, a future together is something both of them – and us – can finally happily look forward to once again.
But how can these two important individuals with their own separate lives and responsibilities make the most of their downtime and reconnect after time apart? How can they keep their love and support of each other well fed and stronger than ever? Call it wishful thinking, but we may have some ideas. Read on to see our Season 3 Malec wishlist!
Another Date
We were lucky enough to see Magnus haul Alec away from his punishing self-imposed schedule for their long overdue first date, and although there was a little bit of awkwardness as they learned more about each other, ultimately, the night ended exactly the way we all wanted – with them stronger, closer, and more determined to put in the work. But while Magnus and Alec portal and pash offscreen in places like Japan and Paris – the city of love itself – sadly, that is where the date adventures for us, as an audience, end. Another chance to see them away from their duties, talking about themselves and each other without work talk making an appearance? Maybe even making an effort to dress up? (We’re looking at you, Alec). Sign us up. Getting some on-screen time to woo each other and keep that flame burnin’ is where it’s at.
Home Hangouts
Chilling out with bae at home can get super casual in some of the best ways, and paves the path for all kinds of coupley fun. Magnus’ apartment has many things to help entertain – stereo, vast amounts of books, a killer balcony view of the city and stars, an alluded bathtub – and, if by chance something specific isn’t readily available, the High Warlock and his magic finger snap are able to summon it immediately. Sometimes all you need is some good food and drink, company, a couch, and a movie. Having the rest of the squad drop in to join them wouldn’t be unwelcome either, but getting to see our fave lovebirds hanging at home with nothing to call them away would be a lovely moment to experience first.
Couple Missions
Sometimes duty calls and the only way you get to see your significant other is at work. Well, Magnus and Alec have the luxury of working parallel in the same protect-and-problem-solve industry, which can prove favorable in the crossing-paths department. We also know both men are powerful leaders and more than capable of protecting themselves and each other. An opportunity to see them teaming up for a mission, out in the field together, depending on each other in different ways would provide us with all sorts of wonderful possibilities for badassery, danger-enforced boyfriend angst or workplace quippiness. Can we, please?
Spar Sesh
That’s how the line goes, right? Boyfriends who spar together stay together? Not only would we be glued to our screens for the chance to see Alec’s archery and blade skills up against Magnus’ mesmerizing mix of offensive and defensive magic, but seeing them leave their weapons by the wayside and go hand to hand would be incredible. And sexy, like, whoa. It would probably also get competitive, which tends to be a really good look on the both of them, especially when they’re competing with each other. Besides, y’all know you wanna see Magnus show off his physical fight prowess. He’s got it. Centuries of experience and that body don’t lie.
Catching Zzzs
Whether they’re snuggled up beside each other, piled on top of each other, or it’s simply one of them conked out while the other watches smitten, there’s a certain type of satisfaction involved when it comes to the concept of sleeping lovers. No matter what kind of unstoppable force you are, the need for sleep is a very human necessity, and to see two powerful beings, such as Alec and Magnus, openly trust, seek security, and rest in each other’s arms is the kind of beautiful vulnerability we’re here for. Seriously. Bless our eyeballs already.
Different Kisses
Alec and Magnus aren’t the type of boyfriends to be long without their lips meeting in a good old-fashioned smooch, but kisses come in many variations that say different things, and these boys haven’t even begun to dip their toes in the pool! Kisses on the hand would suit Magnus and Alec’s delightful chivalry, admiration, and comfort of each other; those on the cheek and nose are the level of affectionate we’d love to see; and with a block/deflect rune sitting there begging to be nuzzled up on, neck kisses definitely wouldn’t go amiss either. You can’t beat a tried and true favorite, however – the forehead kiss, which is all gentle, all reverence, and the kind of deep, profound love this couple is built for, would certainly catapult us to the moon and back.
Friendship
There’s no doubt that Magnus and Alec are invested in each other heart, body, and soul – but before that, there were the makings of a friendship. Some of the best relationships are founded on the principal and getting to witness Magnus and Alec joking about, having a laugh, and sharing stories while appreciating the hums and quirks of each other’s personalities, would be cute as hell. We know these two are big fans of one another – seeing just how much, aside from the romance, would surely give us even more reason to love them. Let’s see them be goofballs together!
Trust
It went a bit wonky there for a while, but ironing out the kinks often comes in the early stages of a relationship. Alec has spent much of the series so far learning the do’s and don’t’s of a romance, while Magnus has been tested violently on deeply personal levels – and for a guy who hasn’t had much reason to trust anyone over the course of his life, he’s still learning what it means to have a loyal, well-meaning, trustworthy person like Alec on his side. It’s all part of the journey, however. Magnus and Alec’s great love story is made all the more beautiful for the road-bumps they overcome together. Having that trust build into something solid and unfailing is what we hope is on the horizon.
Hugs
For a couple as loved up as Malec, there’s been a substantial deficit in body-smooshing. Hugs are the pinnacle of human affection. Snuggling, cuddling, being close, and simply holding each other is the easiest, most basic type of affection there is, and one of the most powerful. Hugs are meditative – they ground us, quieten us, de-stress us, bring our hearts physically and figuratively closer together, and make us feel loved, safe, and cared for. They open the way to better communication, trust, and self-esteem. They’re also proven to boost oxytocin, serotonin, and promote healing and protection from disease, so why the hell not? Let Malec heal themselves together.
