Our month-long Halloween celebration continues as we start off our Creature of the Week series. Each week, we’ll update this article to include a different creature from popular culture that captured our hearts (and brains). Make sure to follow us over on Twitter for the full experience using the hashtag #31DaysOfHalloween.
Zombie of the Week:
R (Warm Bodies)
#31DaysOfHalloween continues as we give out “Zombie of the week.” It was difficult to narrow it down to just one favorite undead hero, but this prestigious honor goes to R from Warm Bodies. With only mild decay and a look more reminiscent of Edward Scissorhands than a rotting corpse, it’s easy to see how Warm Bodies manages to pull off a zombie rom-com. You can throw on as much Party City college!zombie costume makeup as you want, but it’s still Nicholas Hoult with zero gnawed flesh prosthetics there.
But R’s objectively Hot Topic Hottie look isn’t the only thing that qualifies him for Zombie of the Week. His witty narration, the driving force in Isaac Marion’s novel, makes audiences empathize with R from the start – even while he’s munching on human brains. His fascination with the living and his longing to feel again make this zombie a more personal metaphor than in films where the creature represents great political and social maladies. R is our Zombie of the Week for showing us that sometimes the flesh-eating hoards are just people who need a little love in order to feel human again.
Vampire of the Week:
Claudia (Interview with the Vampire)
For Vampire Week, the crown goes to Claudia, from 1992’s Interview with the Vampire. In a movie with two of the most stellar vampires in film history, little Claudia still manages to take the cake (and eat it, too). She was turned to rope Louis into staying with Lestat (just in case you were wondering the level of melodrama going on here). Claudia, the child vampire, steals the spotlight in every scene she’s in.
Hungrier and more vicious than either of her adoptive fathers, she is led by the whims of childhood into kills that are progressively more grotesque. When her dolls fail to entertain her, she begins collecting corpses of grown women. A monster with the face of an angel who terrifies even her maker, Claudia spends her time wrapping both Lestat and Louis around her little finger. Claudia is a wicked delight to behold!
Werewolf of the Week:
Luke Garroway (Shadowhunters)
This week, we award a double win to Luke Garroway, our Werewolf of the Week and TV Father of the Year. All mythical creatures represent something, werewolves especially – be it puberty or rebirth – but for Luke, the balance of strength and protection is clearly symbolic of the parental role he takes on in the lives of so many: from his pack members to the kids he helped raise. Born a Shadowhunter and cast away from his family and friends upon becoming a werewolf, Luke found family in his exile. For showing everyone that the beast within can be both powerful and nurturing – here’s to you, Papa Luke!
Magic User of the Week:
Ambrose Spellman (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina)
Someone must have told the creators of Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina that we couldn’t have a criminal warlock trapped in the body of a sassy talking cat – so they did one better. Ambrose Spellman, our heroine’s cousin and #BigMood gif-generator extraordinaire, is our new magical love. A young-ish warlock on house arrest, lounging around in increasingly ridiculous positions (and in increasingly ridiculous places), wearing consistently fabulous robes, and risking his life to have a cup of tea with a cute boy? A hero in his own right. Always up for a bit of spellcasting and hell-raising with his younger cousin, Ambrose is the absolute heart of the show and we can’t wait to see more of him in Season 2 (done binging yet?).
Demon of the Week:
Mazikeen “Maze” (Lucifer)
Closing out our #31DaysofHalloween celebration, we want to present our favorite denizen of Hell, Lucifer’s BFF and all-around badass, Mazikeen! She is a master of torture, on the formerly-on-FOX TV show Lucifer (after a successful fan campaign to save the show from cancellation, Season 4 will be coming to you on Netflix in 2019). Better known as “Maze,” to her slowly but steadily increasing list of friends, she is a demon who followed Lucifer out of Hell on his vacation to L.A., and reluctantly started to see what all the fuss was about with these humans. We love Maze not just for how strong, awesome, and terrifying she can be – and you definitely want her on your side in a fight – but because of her moments of true vulnerability. She doesn’t always do the right thing at first, but she is growing, learning, and becoming a better all-around…erm…person? Here’s to our favorite Earth-bound demon, and we wish a very Happy Halloween to everyone!
